Autorun is a feature that is present in all versions of Windows. This feature makes it easy for you to use removable media, for example memory sticks, CDs, and DVDs.
This feature lets you easily copy files from one device to another, and you can also use this feature to launch applications.
In Windows XP, you can enable Autorun by right-clicking on My Computer > Manage > Autoplay, and then selecting Run Autorun and Autoplay.

Disable Autorun completely
- Go to the Start menu > type msconfig > press the Enter key
Disable Autorun for removable drives
- Press the Windows key + R, type control, and hit Enter.
- Navigate to the Programs section.
- Right-click on the Autorun.exe file and select Properties.
- Navigate to the Compatibility tab.
- Check the Run this program in compatibility mode box.
- Finally, you can either select Windows XP Service Pack 2 from the dropdown or manually type the version you want.
- Click OK to save changes, then restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

Disable Autorun for network drives
- Navigate to Computer.
- Click on Tools.
- Click on Folder Options.
- Under View tab, uncheck the Show hidden files and folders (dot) option.
- Click on Apply and OK to save changes.
- Navigate to Computer.
- Right click on Local Disk (C:).
- Click on Properties.
- Click on Tools tab.
- Click on Folder Options.
- UnderView tab, uncheck the Show hidden files and folders (dot) option.
Tweak your Registry
- Press the Start key and type regedit.
- Click the Run option.
- In the Registry Editor window, locate the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSessionManagerFile\shell\open\command
- Double click the value Data and make sure the path points to C:\Windows\System32\autoexec.bat
Tweak your Registry with Autoruns
- Open Autoruns (you can find it in the Windows Search bar by typing in autoruns).
- Click on the File menu and select Open Autoruns in the submenu.
- Find your problematic autorun.inf file and click once on it.
- Now, in the Autorun window, click the Autorun button and in the New Autorun window, click on Create.
- A window will pop up, asking you to enter the path for your autorun.inf file.
- Type in the location of the file and select Save.
