Brother fax machines come packed with many advanced features, and their fax software, which is known as Brother fax, is among the best available on the market.
However, even though Brother fax machines are extremely reliable, some users have reported Brother fax drum error.
As a consequence, the Brother fax machine is unable to send or receive faxes.

Check to see if your Brother fax drum is faulty
- The drum unit is generally located at the bottom of the printer.
- Press the Power button to switch off the printer and unplug the power cord from the outlet.
- Disconnect the Brother fax cable from the printer.
- Open the top cover of the printer and gently remove the drum unit.
- Clean the drum lightly with a cotton fabric moistened in rubbing alcohol.
- Now, reassemble the printer and check if the error is resolved.
Replace drum
- Make sure your printer is powered on.
- Open your scanner’s front cover.
- Disconnect the power cord.
- Remove the toner cartridge and drum unit.
- Clean the drum unit and toner cartridge.
- Put the drum unit back on the scanner.
- Put toner cartridge back in.
- Connect the power cord.
- Reinstall the printer software.

Restart your computer
- Make sure the printer is plugged in and turned on
- Check the Brother machine’s toner levels
- Try a different fax line
- Check if the fax line is in use
- Restart your computer
- Clear the fax lines
- Restart your computer
- Check to see if your fax is working properly
Reset the Brother fax drum
- Click on the Start and Click on Control Panel.
- Now click on Hardware and Sound and Printers and Faxes.
- Click on the Brother Fax and Click on Printer properties.
- Now click on the Maintenance tab, and click on the Reinsert Toner button.
- Start the Brother Fax printer, and press the Stop button.
- Pull out the paper tray, and push it back in.
- Pull out the drum unit, and push it back in.
Perform a factory reset
- Press and hold the power button for 10-15 seconds
- Unplug the power cord from the back of the machine
- Press the Power button until the machine turns off
- Disconnect the power cord from the power outlet
- Power the machine on using the Power button
- Press and hold the Power button for 15 seconds
- Connect the power cord to the power outlet
- Connect the power cord to the back of the machine
- Press the Power button
Perform a Clean boot
- A clean boot is a troubleshooting technique that improves system stability and fixes several problems. To perform a clean boot, press the Windows key + R hotkey.
- Enter msconfig in Run’s Open box, and press the OK button.
- Go through the tabs on the System Configuration window, and select Selective startup to open the window directly below.
- Select the Load system services and Load startup items checkboxes.
- Then click Disable All to open the window directly below.
- Select the Load system services and Load startup items checkboxes.
- Select the Apply option on the System Configuration window.
- Next, press the OK button to close the System Configuration window.
- Press the Windows key + R hotkey, and enter “msconfig” in Run’s Open box.
- Press the ENTER key to open the System Configuration window directly below.
- Select the Service tab, and deselect all options.
- Deselect the Load Startup items checkbox on the System Configuration window.
- Then press the Apply and OK options on the System Configuration window.
- Press the Windows key + R hotkey, and enter “services.msc” in Run’s Open box.
- Right-click on Brother Fax services, and select Startup from the menu.
- Select Disabled from the drop-down menu.
- Close the Services window.
